Starting January 1, 2026, Ontario construction projects meeting certain criteria must have a Health Canada–licensed Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on site. This includes proper accessories, signage, regular inspections, and at least one person trained in CPR and AED use present whenever work is underway.

This requirement comes from O. Reg. 157/25: Construction Projects under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

**Financial Help: AED Reimbursement Program**

To support compliance, the Ontario government introduced a reimbursement program through Bill 30 – Working for Workers Seven Act, 2025, giving the WSIB authority to reimburse some AED costs for constructors.

What is the program?

The Automated External Defibrillators for Construction Projects Reimbursement Program helps offset costs for purchasing AEDs at qualifying sites, promoting broader use of this life-saving device across the industry.

Who's eligible?

Constructors can receive up to $2,500 for one AED per project if:

  • They have an active WSIB account
  • A trained first aider is on site during work
  • The site regularly has 20 or more workers
  • The project lasts at least three months
